Annual Reunion
The Guild's Annual Reunion is normally on the first Saturday in March, though in 2010 we shall be celebrating 100 Years of the WHS Guild with a Grand Reunion on July 10 2010 instead. Watch this space for further details when arrangements are made.
In 1910, nine years after the School was founded and the first students had become Old Girls, many were anxious not to lose touch with each other and the School. Thus the idea of the Old Girls’ Guild developed, warmly welcomed by Miss Christie, the first Headmistress. She called a meeting of all former students on 20 July 1910 to consider the suggestion. This was attended by about 30 Old Girls and several members of staff. A constitution, whose main objects were “to maintain fellowship and union between old students and staff and to continue the School's tradition of service to the community”, was drawn up, and the Guild was duly inaugurated with Miss Christie as President. The Headteacher, while in post, is President, with an “Old Girl” as Vice-President. The committee, which also includes the Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl as ex-officio members, meets regularly to ensure the smooth running of the Guild.
WHS Centenary 2001
A Grand Reunion to celebrate the centenary, was held at the High School on Saturday 7 July 2001, attended by some 800 former pupils and staff, and some of their families. Despite the weather, Guild members and their guests enjoyed a barbecue lunch, and tea later in the afternoon. Members were able to explore the School and to catch up with their contemporaries. A History of WHS, commemorative mugs (two designs by girls in Year 10 – 4th year) and pens were on sale. These are available by mail order. Centenary Goods Order Form
Visitors enjoyed a dance display and an art exhibition by current students, while the Music Department held a workshop and final rehearsal for all the musicians and singers who were participating in the forthcoming tour of Austria. There was a fascinating exhibition of archive material put together by a small working group of the Guild committee. The first part of the display was the result of research into the first eighteen girls at WHS carried out by a group of Year 9 (3rd Form) and Year 12 (Lower Sixth) girls.
